i want to swap out my 120gb drive into the hdd casing that comes with the halo edition console. can i do it without having to remove the bare drive ie with all the metal casing in one lump or will i have to completely take it apart?

It should! I obviously can’t give some blanket guarantee, but I’ve read of people using terabyte drives. Taller drives will work as well, but you might have to force them into the case :)

Does this work with any sized 2.5″ SATA notebook drive? like I know you specified it should be 9mm tall but I mean like can you use any size of storage like say a 500GB or 1TB SATA notebook drive? and then use that instead of any sort of external drive for game storage?
